Start the Job

When an employer gives you a job, they are making an investment in you. They want you to succeed and do well in your role.  Employers won’t expect you to know everything on your first day.

However, first impressions are very important.  Listen and learn about new instructions and read any rules and regulations given to you.  Make sure you are on time and be respectful.

A new job will often have a trial period. This gives your employer a chance to evaluate your performance and behaviour at work for a period of time, to ensure you are a ‘good fit’ for their business.  It is very important to try your best during this learning phase.

Most organisations will have policies in relation to things like:

  • Occupational health and safety
  • Uniforms
  • Start and finish times
  • Breaks
  • Sending and receiving emails
  • Using the internet
  • Personal phone calls

So make sure you take notice of any instructions given.
